When you book a stay at THE THIEF, your room key opens more than just your room—it gives you access to our neighbor, Astrup Fearnley Museet.
To give you a glimpse into this artistic world, we sat down with Ida-Sofie, our Guest Relations Supervisor. Here’s what she revealed about what makes Astrup Fearnley Museet an unforgettable experience:
So Ida-Sofie, what makes Astrup Fearnley Museet a must-visit?
Visitors can expect an exhibition including different artists and types of art pieces. The museum constantly refreshes its displays, offering a vibrant mix of new and classic pieces. Thanks to our partnership with Astrup Fearnley Museet, we are able to offer an exceptional art experience beyond the art pieces you will find at our property.
The Astrup Fearnley Collection is one of Europe’s most comprehensive collections of international contemporary art. Could you tell us more about it?
At this very moment you can explore the Astrup Fearnley Collection until December 30th. The Astrup Fearnley Collection pulses with the spirit of contemporary art. Born in the 1960s from Hans Rasmus Astrup’s vision, it’s a thrilling mix of over 1,500 different contributions to the field of contemporary art. With a special focus on the transformative 1990s—featuring names like Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, and Cindy Sherman—many of the artworks were created during this decade and the early 2000s, when several artists achieved their breakthrough.
What are your top art pieces you would recommend seeing?
Among the collection’s standout pieces is Jeff Koons’ iconic “Michael Jackson and Bubbles” (1988), a life-size porcelain sculpture. The piece depicts Michael Jackson reclining on a flower bed with his chimpanzee, Bubbles, holding a white cloth. There are three versions of this sculpture: the second one is in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and last one is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Another highlight I would recommend is Børre Sæthre’s “My Private Sky” (2001). This artwork takes visitors on a journey from a waiting area through a portal into a vibrant blue room, creating the sensation of being enveloped by the sky, where they encounter the striking taxidermied wild horse.
This piece made a significant impact when exhibited in 2001, becoming the cover image of a prestigious art book, Installation Art in the New Millennium (Thames & Hudson, 2003), and earning recognition as one of Norway’s most notable art events of the decade.
