Statue Painting, 2011

Nate Lowman | 1979

Nate Lowman quickly made a name for himself in New York’s art scene in the early 2000s, known for his sharp and humorous take on appropriation art.
The raw material for his art is often chosen based on a personal interest, and is gathered from news, pop culture and art history. Lowman is primarily focused on telling stories where he works closely with selecting, curating, orchestrating and manipulating visual elements. His art reflects the contemporary American society – often with clear references and underlying criticism of violence, celebrity culture and political affairs.

Illustrations from different eras and contexts are placed in a new context, and forms a personal and complex narrative. At the same time, he opens up for non-linear stories that invites the viewer to create their own interpretations.
